Sennebec
Pond is a lake in Knox County, Maine, Latitude 441511N, Longitude 0691602W.
It has an elevation of 88 feet. Throughout the summertime months highs are in the 80's, and through summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. High temperatures all through the wintertime are normally in the 30's, and nighttime lows through the winter usually plunge into the 0's. Archaeological studies claim that the Sennebec pond was the Atlantic border, with Camden, Rockport, Hope and all other coastal towns being in fact under water at the time. One of the most important action of the Sennebec Pond association was the demolition of the old dam at the South end of the pond and replace it with a fish ladder. This accomplished two major goals. It stabilized the height of the waters throughout the years, and provided an up-river path for the spawning salmon. Without this, the pond would have reverted back to a river leaving only mud in areas that were once pond waters. People who live around here are privileged with a delightfully view and water front. Boating, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing (summer and winter). There is no public access to the lake, although many believe it is public, allowing the residents to enjoy their privacy. Every spring, association members place markers to warn boating enthusiasts of unsafe spots were large rocks of driftwood may cause damage to unwary vessels (at no cost), as a service to pond property owners. They also check the lake for signs of milfoil contamination. Although this danger is minimized by the limited access, the problem does exist. Another danger is the destruction of active loon nests by jet skis and boaters. The association monitors these actions to minimize, if not totally eliminate the danger. These services are not mandated. All work is done by volunteer members of the association. Membership fees pay for the costs of water markers and replacements, gas & maintenance for placing them, filing fees, website, etc. The Sennebec pond is an expansion of the St. Georges river on its way to Warren. A trip south is not possible due to the fish ladder, but a trip north is best traveled by canoe or kayak, since the waters tend to be shallow, and many tree branches are lurking just below the surface. Big boats may not be able to do it. Smaller boats and pontoons should have no problems if the monitor the depth and lift their motors when necessary, and watch for water fowl nests. The association is very interested in feedback from other pond residents. We are constantly trying to enlarge our membership and try to accommodate the wishes of our neighbors. Membership dues are $5.00 per person annually. We try to meet twice a year to plan for the future and revue issues that came up in the recent past. Expanded membership means more ideas to help improve life on the Sennebec. If you are interested in joining us (we'd be happy to have you) or offer a donation, please send monies to Susan Harris, Treasurer, 1512 Sennebec Road, Union 04862. or write to: Sennebec Pond Association
P. O. Box 862 Union, Maine 04862 For more information, e-mail Kay Santorineos. Without support from pond owners, users and fishermen these services are not possible. Next association meeting and pot luck dinner is scheduled for Sunday, April 26, 2009, 7 pm. |

| Did
you know that Sennebec Pond has new residents? Bald eagles made a nest
and last year they were blessed with two eaglets. On occasion, they land
on lake properties to munch or digest their supper. The two pictures above
show them less than 20 feet of the ground. We'd love to have some better
pictures, so if you happen to catch them someday in a favorable position,
please send us a copy. In the meantime, enjoy! |
